Position Purpose

The Senior Mine Geologist is responsible for leading all daily Grade Control (GC) activities within the open pit mining operation and providing robust geological inputs aligned with the Mine Management Plan (MMP).

The role involves:

  • Leading grade control block modelling and wireframing activities.
  • Planning and supervising Reverse Circulation (RC) grade control drilling.
  • Managing grade control sampling and logging.
  • Ensuring accurate ore–waste delineation.
  • Minimizing ore loss and dilution.
  • Maintaining geological database integrity and data quality.
  • Supporting mine-to-mill reconciliation and end-of-month reporting.
  • Managing NAF/PAF classification and material routing in accordance with operational and environmental requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safety, Environment and Community Relations

  • Demonstrate strong visible safety leadership.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture within the Mine Geology team.
  • Participate in the preparation and review of:
    • Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)
    • Job Safety Analyses (JSAs)
    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Identify geology-related hazards in drilling and pit operations.
  • Intervene and stop work when unsafe conditions are identified.
  • Support environmental compliance and community engagement initiatives.
  • Respect local customs, traditions, and site requirements.

2. People Management

  • Supervise and mentor:
    • Mine Geologists
    • Junior Geologists
    • Grade Control Technicians
  • Allocate daily and weekly work assignments.
  • Monitor safety performance and data quality standards.
  • Deliver on-the-job coaching and technical training.
  • Support succession planning and staff development initiatives.
  • Contribute to employee performance reviews.

3. Grade Control Drilling and Sampling

  • Plan and supervise RC grade control drilling programs.
  • Ensure adequate drilling density for ore-waste delineation.
  • Define and maintain NAF/PAF classification requirements.
  • Coordinate drilling activities with:
    • Survey teams
    • Drilling contractors
  • Oversee RC and blast-hole sampling processes.
  • Ensure proper sample chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Lead QA/QC programs involving:
    • Standards
    • Blanks
    • Duplicates
    • Repeat samples
  • Investigate and resolve QA/QC issues.

4. Grade Control Wireframing and Block Modelling

  • Develop and maintain grade control mineralization wireframes.
  • Update short-range grade control block models.
  • Support:
    • Ore mark-up
    • Short-term mine planning
    • Dilution control
  • Produce geological sections and plans for operational teams.

5. Ore Mark-Up, ROM Pad and NAF/PAF Management

  • Prepare accurate ore polygons and dig plans.
  • Support mining operations in minimizing dilution and ore loss.
  • Provide geological input for ROM stockpile management.
  • Ensure correct material classification and routing.
  • Guide operational teams on NAF/PAF coding and waste rock management.

6. Data and Database Management

  • Ensure timely capture and validation of:
    • Drilling data
    • Sampling data
    • Logging data
    • Assay results
  • Maintain a clean and auditable geological database.
  • Perform data validation and QA/QC checks.
  • Generate:
    • Geological sections
    • Plans
    • Grade summaries
    • Tonnage reports

7. Reconciliation and Reporting

  • Lead operational reconciliation activities, including:
    • Grade Control Model vs. Mined Material
    • Mined Ore vs. Plant Feed
  • Collaborate with:
    • Mining Department
    • Metallurgy Team
    • Survey Department
  • Prepare monthly reconciliation reports covering:
    • Tonnage
    • Grade
    • Ore loss
    • Dilution
  • Identify reconciliation discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.
  • Contribute geological inputs to weekly and monthly site reports.

Desired Experience and Technical Skills

Candidates with the following experience will have an added advantage:

  • Proficiency in Micromine for:
    • Wireframing
    • Geological modelling
    • Grade control
  • Experience using Acquire for database management and QA/QC.
  • Experience in greenfield mining projects and operational ramp-up environments.
  • Experience working in remote and multicultural mining operations.

Qualifications and Licences

Applicants must possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Geology
    • Geological Engineering
    • Or an equivalent discipline
  • Professional membership (preferred).
  • Valid driver’s licence suitable for mine-site operations.
