Job Purpose

The Specialist Credit Environmental and Social Risk will support implementation of the Bank’s Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) by conducting Environmental and Social Risk Assessments, integrating ESG and climate risk considerations into credit processes, and monitoring environmental and social performance across the lending portfolio.

The role provides technical expertise in Environmental and Social Risk Management throughout the credit lifecycle, including:

  • Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD).
  • ESG risk assessment.
  • Climate risk evaluation.
  • Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAPs).
  • Credit Committee support.
  • Portfolio monitoring.
  • ESG reporting and governance.

The Specialist will ensure compliance with:

  • CRDB Bank policies.
  • Bank of Tanzania requirements.
  • International ESG standards.
  • Development finance partner requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Environmental and Social Risk Assessment (ESDD)

  • Conduct Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) for:
    • Lending transactions.
    • Investments.
    • Other credit facilities.
  • Perform Environmental and Social Risk Categorization according to the Bank’s ESMS.
  • Assess risks related to:
    • Environmental impacts.
    • Social impacts.
    • Climate change.
    • Labour practices.
    • Occupational health and safety.
    • Biodiversity.
    • Community health and safety.
    • Land acquisition and resettlement.
    • Human rights.
  • Identify significant environmental and social risks.
  • Recommend mitigation measures and Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAPs).
  • Review:
    • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports.
    • Environmental permits and licenses.
    • Audit reports.
    • Other ESG-related documentation.
  • Prepare Environmental and Social Risk Assessment reports for Credit Committees.

2. Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) Implementation

  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of the Bank’s ESMS.
  • Ensure ESG requirements are integrated into:
    • Credit appraisal.
    • Credit approval processes.
    • Lending procedures.
  • Support development and improvement of:
    • ESG procedures.
    • Screening tools.
    • Checklists.
    • Guidance notes.
  • Ensure mandatory Environmental and Social Risk reviews are completed before credit approval.
  • Support review of internal policies to strengthen ESG integration.

3. ESG Digitalization and Credit Systems Support

  • Support integration of Environmental and Social Risk requirements into:
    • CreditPro.
    • Credit Management Information Systems.
  • Contribute to digital transformation of ESG risk processes.
  • Support enhancement of ESG tools and credit management systems.

4. Portfolio Monitoring and Compliance

  • Monitor implementation of:
    • Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAPs).
    • Environmental and Social Conditions Precedent (CPs).
    • Conditions Subsequent (CSs).
    • ESG-related loan covenants.
  • Conduct environmental and social monitoring visits.
  • Review:
    • Client monitoring reports.
    • Consultant assessment reports.
  • Follow up corrective actions with:
    • Relationship Managers.
    • Clients.
  • Escalate significant environmental and social incidents.
  • Prepare high-risk portfolio watchlists.
  • Support annual Environmental and Social Risk portfolio reviews.

5. Climate Risk Assessment

  • Conduct climate risk screening for credit applications.
  • Assess:
    • Physical climate risks.
    • Transition climate risks.
  • Integrate climate risk considerations into ESDD reports.
  • Provide technical advice on climate-sensitive lending transactions.
  • Maintain climate risk information within the credit portfolio.
  • Support climate-related portfolio analysis.
  • Monitor climate-related covenants and mitigation measures.

6. ESG Reporting and Risk Information Management

  • Maintain Environmental and Social Risk databases and monitoring systems.
  • Update:
    • ESG risk registers.
    • Portfolio dashboards.
  • Prepare periodic Environmental and Social Risk reports for:
    • Credit Management.
    • Credit Committees.
    • Regulators.
    • Development finance partners.
  • Ensure ESG information is accurate, complete, and reliable.

7. Stakeholder Coordination and Advisory Support

Collaborate with:

  • Business Units.
  • Legal Department.
  • Compliance.
  • Risk Management.
  • ICT.
  • Operations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating environmental and social consultants.
  • Supporting engagement with development finance institutions and technical partners.
  • Participating in client meetings to explain ESG requirements.
  • Providing ESG guidance throughout the credit process.

8. Training and Knowledge Sharing

  • Conduct awareness sessions on Environmental and Social Risk Management.
  • Support training programs for:
    • Relationship Managers.
    • Credit Teams.
    • Business Units.
  • Promote ESG awareness across the Bank.
  • Share lessons learned and best practices from ESDD activities.
  • Monitor emerging ESG regulations and international standards.

Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in:

  • Environmental Science.
  • Environmental Engineering.
  • Natural Resources Management.
  • Environmental Management.
  • Sustainability.
  • Climate Change.
  • Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Social Sciences.
  • Related fields.

Professional Certifications (Added Advantage)

Candidates with certifications in ESG, sustainability, or environmental risk management will have an advantage, including:

  • IFC Sustainability Training.
  • Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
  • ISSP Certification.
  • CFA ESG Investing Certificate.
  • ISO 14001 Certification.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in:
    • Environmental and Social Risk Management.
    • Banking or financial institutions.
    • Development finance institutions.
    • Environmental consultancy.
    • Regulatory agencies.
    • Project finance or related fields.

Required practical experience:

  • Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD).
  • Credit appraisal support.
  • Portfolio monitoring.
  • ESG integration in lending processes.
  • Climate risk assessment.
  • Sustainability reporting.
  • Environmental and social risk monitoring.

Technical Knowledge Required
