Position Summary
Ifakara Health Institute is seeking two Research Officers to support the Map EA Node Project based in Dar es Salaam.
The successful candidates will work under the supervision of the Senior Research Scientist and support research activities through:
- Data science and analytical model development.
- Data preparation and management.
- Workflow deployment.
- Data visualization.
- Research reporting.
- Scientific publications.
- Collaboration with researchers and partners.
Research Officers will also be expected to design and implement small research projects that contribute to the overall objectives of the MAP project.

Key Responsibilities
Research & Data Management
- Conduct literature reviews, data searches, and data extraction.
- Extract relevant metrics from published research and official reports.
- Collect, manage, and process different datasets.
- Conduct preliminary data analysis.
- Support development of analytical models.
Data Analysis & Visualization
Use tools including:
- Microsoft Excel.
- ArcGIS/QGIS.
- STATA.
- R.
- Python.
- Other data analysis and visualization software.
Responsibilities include:
- Manipulating and analyzing datasets.
- Creating graphs, reports, maps, and visualizations.
- Developing analytical outputs for research dissemination.
Data Quality & Documentation
- Follow and adapt data extraction and processing protocols.
- Promote best practices in data management.
- Support IT housekeeping activities.
- Maintain backups and documentation.
- Review data processing procedures.
Workplace Safety & Compliance
- Follow institutional policies and procedures.
- Identify workplace hazards and apply appropriate controls.
- Report workplace injuries, illnesses, and near misses.
- Maintain personal safety and protect colleagues from workplace risks.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant quantitative discipline, including:
- Statistics.
- Mathematics.
- Data Science.
- Computer Science.
- Engineering.
- Related fields.
Required Skills & Competencies
Candidates should demonstrate:
Technical Skills
- Strong computer skills.
- Experience with data analysis and statistical software.
- Programming skills in:
- R/RStudio.
- Python.
- STATA or similar tools.
- Knowledge of data visualization applications.
- Ability to develop packages and dashboards using R.
Analytical Skills
- Strong numerical and analytical abilities.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to review and validate analytical outputs.
Project Management Skills
- Ability to manage projects and meet deadlines.
- Experience working independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Public Health Knowledge
- Understanding of epidemiology.
- Knowledge of vector-borne diseases such as malaria.
- Interest in public health research and advanced modelling.
Communication Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prepare research reports and publications.
- Ability to communicate professionally with researchers and partners.
Required Experience
Applicants should have experience in:
- Managing and analyzing datasets.
- Data cleaning, manipulation, and interpretation.
- Using R software (essential).
- Developing or delivering training for different audiences.
- Working with spatial data and geometry files using GIS tools.
Language Requirements
Required:
- Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal).
Additional advantage:
- Knowledge of French.
- Knowledge of Spanish.
- Knowledge of Portuguese.
