Job Purpose

The Attendant Front End will be responsible for ensuring good performance, safety, and housekeeping within the Front-End section of the sugar manufacturing plant.

The Front-End section involves the cane preparation unit and juice extraction unit. The role is responsible for ensuring that key performance indicators (KPIs) remain within the required operating range through process monitoring, troubleshooting, defect correction, and supporting maintenance during breakdown repairs and off-crop periods.

Business and Financial Accountabilities

• Ensure and monitor the condition and reliability of machinery within the Front-End section.

Customer and Stakeholder Accountabilities

• Perform all tasks in accordance with Kilombero Sugar’s Safety, Quality, Health and Environment policies and procedures.
• Take reasonable care of personal health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by actions or omissions.

Operational Responsibilities

• Ensure proper operation from the cane yard to the mill house by liaising with Front-End Operators, including the Hilo Spiller, Feeder Table, and Control Room Operator, to maintain consistent operation and performance during the shift.
• Ensure sanitation at the mill station is appropriately maintained through the application of biocides.
• Check the flow and temperature of bearing cooling water and ensure it remains at ambient temperature.
• Report any abnormalities to the Front-End Foreman.
• Ensure the Front-End section complies with all safety procedures during operation and maintenance, including lockout and isolation procedures.
• During scheduled mill stops, provide technical assistance to the maintenance team during repair works and inspections.
• Troubleshoot operational problems and ensure smooth running of the Front-End section.
• Test all standby pumps as required once per week on the specified day and report any faults to the Front-End Foreman.
• Conduct daily and weekly inspections according to established procedures and provide feedback on the Front-End section, including hammer wear, juice pumps, hydraulic systems, and gearbox oil levels.
• Ensure proper handover at the end of each shift in accordance with handover procedures.
• Ensure consistent supply of mixed juice to the process house by checking juice pump efficiency and the mill discharge unit.
• Ensure imbibition application at the mills is maintained at appropriate settings, including temperature and flow rate.
• Regularly check and inspect the arcing of mill rolls to ensure effective crushing and juice extraction.
• Maintain proper housekeeping within the Front-End section.
• Ensure juice and oil leakages are identified and arrested immediately.
• Ensure correct machine adjustments are made, including mill settings and mill lift, to achieve required KPIs.
• Conduct sampling of individual machine products to troubleshoot and identify faults.
• Ensure the correct mill bypass procedure is followed whenever there is a fault on a mill, after reporting the issue to the Control Room Operator or Front-End Foreman.
• Report any incident that may affect personal or others’ health, cause injury, or impact the environment to the Front-End Foreman no later than the end of the shift during which the incident occurred.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the relevant line manager.

Must-Have Skills

• Good communication skills.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have:

• Ordinary Level of secondary education or above.
• Certificate in Fitter Mechanics from a recognised institution.
• At least 3 years of working experience in the sugar industry.

Terms of Service

The successful candidate will be engaged on a Permanent Contract.
