Barrick’s Africa & Middle East (AME) team is seeking a qualified and motivated Boilermaker to join its Plant Engineering Maintenance team at North Mara Gold Mine.


Position Summary

The Boilermaker is responsible for carrying out fabrication, welding, maintenance, repair, and installation of plant equipment and steel structures to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient mining operations. The role involves performing planned and breakdown maintenance, maintaining compliance with health and safety standards, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the plant.

Key Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Comply with all Barrick Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures.
  • Report all HSE incidents through the approved reporting system.
  • Conduct task risk assessments, including:
    • Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
    • Field Level Risk Assessment (FLRA)
  • Follow isolation and Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and environmentally safe workplace using the 5S principles.
  • Ensure the plant operates within approved operating limits and report any abnormalities.

Plant Maintenance

  • Perform planned and breakdown maintenance on plant equipment.
  • Conduct daily maintenance inspections.
  • Complete maintenance work orders accurately and on time.
  • Create follow-up notifications where required.
  • Maintain proper shift handovers and communicate outstanding work.

Fabrication & Welding

  • Fabricate and assemble metal structures using welding, cutting, shaping, and measuring equipment.
  • Fabricate, weld, and install:
    • Chutes
    • Pipes
    • Steel boxes
    • Reducers
    • Bends
    • Y-pieces
  • Repair steel structures, tanks, chutes, and pipelines.
  • Apply standard protective paint to fabricated and repaired steel structures.
  • Assess weld quality and identify defects requiring correction.

Equipment Inspection & Repair

  • Inspect pressure vessels, tanks, pipes, and steel structures for leaks, cracks, corrosion, and defects.
  • Repair and rebuild mechanical components and equipment.
  • Perform basic mechanical fitting, rubber lining, scaffolding, and rigging duties as assigned.
  • Remove defective components using cranes, hoists, power tools, and hand tools.

Technical Support

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Apply industry best maintenance practices.
  • Maintain mechanical tools and workshop equipment according to OEM and Barrick standards.
  • Maintain inventory records for equipment, spare parts, and consumables.

Housekeeping

  • Clean equipment using appropriate tools and cleaning materials.
  • Maintain workshop cleanliness and organization.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are properly stored after use.

Other Duties

  • Carry out any additional tasks assigned by the reporting supervisor.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the maintenance department.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Technical or vocational school training.
  • Apprenticeship or equivalent on-the-job training.
  • FTC, VETA, IMTT Trade Test, or equivalent qualification in Boilermaking or Fabrication.
  • Sound knowledge of mining safety regulations and industry best practices.

Experience

Applicants should have:

  • Minimum 3 years of post-apprenticeship experience.
  • Experience maintaining heavy mobile equipment in surface mining operations.
  • Practical plant maintenance experience involving:
    • Mills
    • Crushers
    • Conveyors
    • Compressors
    • Pumps
    • CIL Tanks
    • Related processing equipment
  • Previous experience in industrial plant maintenance.
  • Experience in both open-pit and underground mining operations.

About North Mara Gold Mine

North Mara Gold Mine is located in Tarime District, Mara Region, approximately:

  • 100 km east of Lake Victoria
  • 20 km south of the Kenya border

The operation consists of:

  • Gokona Underground Mine
  • Nyabirama Open Pit Mine

The processing plant has the capacity to process approximately 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
