Barrick’s Africa & Middle East (AME) team is seeking a qualified Rigger to join its operations at North Mara Gold Mine.


Position Summary

The Rigger is responsible for ensuring the safe planning, inspection, maintenance, certification, and operation of lifting equipment and rigging systems across the mine. The role supports safe lifting operations by conducting rigging studies, maintaining lifting gear, enforcing statutory compliance, and developing safe work procedures in line with mining regulations and Barrick’s Zero Harm philosophy.

Key Responsibilities

Rigging Operations

  • Conduct rigging studies for all lifting activities across the mine.
  • Ensure adequate controls are in place for the safe use and movement of lifting equipment.
  • Monitor, plan, and maintain crane wire ropes, rigging equipment, and associated lifting accessories.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, repair, and inspection of lifting gears and wire ropes in accordance with statutory requirements.

Safety & Compliance

  • Develop and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for lifting and lowering operations.
  • Maintain and update statutory registers for:
    • Cranes
    • Hoists
    • Scaffolds
    • Ladders
    • Slings
    • Snatch blocks
    • Lever hoists
    • Wire ropes
    • Man cages
    • Other lifting equipment
  • Inspect and certify lifting equipment in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health (OSHAS) and Mine Health and Safety (MHSA) requirements.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Clean, measure, inspect, and maintain steel wire ropes and chains.
  • Fabricate, assemble, repair, and install rigging systems, supporting structures, hoists, and pulling equipment using hand and power tools.

Lifting Operations

  • Select appropriate lifting equipment, including:
    • Cables
    • Winches
    • Pulleys
    • Slings
  • Determine suitable lifting methods based on load weight, dimensions, and operational requirements.
  • Direct crane operators and lifting teams through verbal communication and hand signals.
  • Safely maneuver suspended loads around obstacles using multi-point suspension techniques.

Training & Development

  • Coach and mentor employees for future Rigger and Ropesman positions.
  • Support succession planning through practical skills development and training.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Secondary School Education Certificate.
  • Trade Certificate in Rigging from a recognized institution.
  • VETA Driving Certificate.
  • Valid Tanzanian Driving Licence (Classes B, C, D, and E).
  • Ability to operate manual (stick shift) transmission vehicles.
  • Sound knowledge of mining safety regulations and lifting standards.

Experience

Applicants should have:

  • Minimum 3 years of post-qualification experience as a Rigger or Ropesman.
  • Practical experience in industrial lifting operations within mining or heavy industry.

About North Mara Gold Mine

North Mara Gold Mine is located in Tarime District, Mara Region, approximately:

  • 100 km east of Lake Victoria
  • 20 km south of the Kenya border

The operation consists of:

  • Gokona Underground Mine
  • Nyabirama Open Pit Mine

The processing plant has the capacity to process approximately 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
