About Six Rivers Africa

Six Rivers Africa (SRA) is a Tanzanian NGO operating under a cooperation agreement with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) to provide technical and financial support in Ruaha National Park.

The Usangu Sector is facing a significant illegal livestock encroachment challenge, particularly around the Ihefu Wetland — the source of the Ruaha River and a nationally important water and energy resource. Thousands of cattle are illegally grazing inside the protected area, resulting in habitat degradation, competition with wildlife, and increased pressure on conservation enforcement.

SRA is implementing an integrated Cattle Sensitisation Programme that combines community engagement, aerial surveillance, cattle ear-tag monitoring, and structured legal follow-up to address illegal cattle presence in priority conservation areas.

Position Overview

Six Rivers Africa is seeking an experienced Cattle Sensitisation Program Manager to lead the implementation of its Livestock Programme.

The successful candidate will report to the Protection Manager and work closely with the Head of Conservation and Field Operations Manager to coordinate, deploy, and supervise Cattle Sensitisation Teams.

The role requires strong community engagement skills, field management experience, and the ability to coordinate effectively with government authorities, conservation partners, enforcement agencies, and local communities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Community and Stakeholder Engagement

• Build and maintain trust-based relationships with pastoralist communities, livestock keepers’ associations, agricultural cooperatives, and local authorities.
• Lead the implementation of the livestock programme in coordination with TANAPA, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, local government authorities, and SRA leadership.
• Support recruitment, training, and supervision of livestock programme teams across Usangu.
• Ensure field teams receive proper briefings before deployment and complete detailed debriefings after missions.
• Analyse field data and coordinate ground activities based on operational findings.
• Work closely with and provide coordination support to the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries.
• Represent SRA in local, district, and national discussions related to livestock management and conservation.

2. Monitoring and Reporting

• Oversee data collection from livestock monitoring deployments and real-time field operations.
• Prepare regular programme reports highlighting activities, key performance indicators, and progress towards project objectives.

3. Other Responsibilities

• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should possess:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Conservation, Natural Resource Management, Rural Development, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of experience in community engagement, livestock management, conservation, or rural development within East Africa.
• Previous experience working with Tanzanian government institutions such as:
  • Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA)
  • Tanzania Wildlife Authority (TAWA)
  • Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism
  • Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries
• Demonstrated ability to manage field teams in remote and challenging operational environments.
• Knowledge of the Ruaha-Usangu landscape and pastoral communities will be an added advantage.
• Strong understanding of pastoralist communities and livestock practices in Tanzania or the wider East African region.
• Excellent communication skills in both English and Swahili.
• Ability to communicate in Sukuma language will be an added advantage.
• Willingness to live full-time in Ikoga and undertake regular extended field deployments.
