The organization currently operates in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and has planted more than 400 million trees worldwide.

In Tanzania, TREES has been active since 2015, working across Mwanza, Simiyu, Singida, Tabora, and Iringa regions through its Forest Garden Approach to promote sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and poverty reduction.


Position Summary

The Communications Coordinator will lead the implementation of the Tanzania Program Communications Strategy, ensuring strong internal and external communications, brand consistency, donor compliance, stakeholder engagement, and organizational visibility.

The role reports directly to the Country Director and has matrix reporting to the Regional Marketing and Communications Manager based in Nairobi.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communication Planning

  • Coordinate and implement communication plans aligned with organizational goals.
  • Develop and disseminate IEC materials, success stories, lessons learned, and impact content.
  • Monitor communication indicators and support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Support adaptive programming through communication and learning initiatives.

Branding and Visibility

  • Ensure compliance with TREES branding and donor visibility requirements.
  • Support staff on communication planning and messaging.
  • Coordinate development and distribution of branded communication materials.

Media Relations and Public Engagement

  • Develop press releases, media kits, and talking points.
  • Build relationships with journalists, media houses, and communication stakeholders.
  • Coordinate interviews, media visits, and public events.
  • Maintain media engagement databases.
  • Support awareness campaigns and advocacy initiatives.

Content Development and Documentation

  • Produce newsletters, success stories, case studies, reports, speeches, social media content, photos, and videos.
  • Conduct field visits to document project impact.
  • Manage visual assets and communication archives.
  • Coordinate content development processes and consent documentation.
  • Support donor visits and stakeholder engagement activities.

Knowledge Management

  • Develop learning briefs, case studies, and knowledge products.
  • Promote organizational learning and information sharing.
  • Maintain communication archives and documentation systems.
  • Capture and disseminate best practices and lessons learned.

Safeguarding and Ethical Communication

  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding policies and ethical communication standards.
  • Verify consent for stories, photographs, and audiovisual materials.
  • Promote respectful, inclusive, and culturally sensitive communication.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in:
    • Communications
    • Journalism
    • Public Relations
    • Media Studies
    • Development Communication
    • Related field

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive professional experience in communications, public relations, media engagement, or knowledge management.
  • Experience in NGOs, development organizations, or international organizations preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Content development and storytelling.
  • Photography and videography.
  • Digital communications management.
  • Branding and donor visibility compliance.
  • Media relations and stakeholder engagement.
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills.
  • Knowledge of Kiswahili is an added advantage.
  • Ability to travel frequently to remote project locations.

Suitability Assessment

This role is best suited for professionals with substantial experience in communications, journalism, public relations, media, development communication, or NGO communications.

Key requirements include:

  • 5+ years of communications experience.
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills.
  • Experience with photography, videography, and content creation.
  • Media engagement and stakeholder management experience.
  • NGO or development-sector exposure.

Candidates whose backgrounds are primarily in banking, accounting, community development, administration, or sales without significant communications experience may find it difficult to meet the minimum requirements for this position.
