Travel Requirement: 10–25% regional travel

About the Role

FHI 360 is seeking an experienced East Africa Regional Technical Advisor I – Polio to provide strategic and technical leadership for the Strengthening Infectious Disease Detection Systems (STRIDES) Activity. The successful candidate will support regional polio eradication efforts through surveillance, laboratory strengthening, outbreak preparedness, data analysis, and capacity building while ensuring compliance with Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) standards and donor requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Provide regional technical leadership for STRIDES Polio activities.
  • Ensure implementation aligns with GPEI guidelines, national policies, and donor requirements.
  • Support surveillance, laboratory strengthening, biosafety, specimen management, and outbreak response.
  • Develop technical tools, guidance documents, and learning resources.
  • Provide technical assistance and mentoring to country teams and government counterparts.

Project Implementation

  • Lead implementation of regional polio work plans.
  • Coordinate with regional and country teams to ensure quality program delivery.
  • Support subcontract management, budgeting, and operational planning.
  • Monitor implementation and resolve technical challenges.

Capacity Building

  • Develop and deliver regional training programs.
  • Strengthen technical competencies of country teams and partners.
  • Identify and address training needs.

Reporting & Quality Assurance

  • Review donor technical and financial reports.
  • Prepare presentations and progress reports for donors.
  • Monitor technical quality and recommend improvements.
  • Identify implementation risks and develop mitigation strategies.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s Degree in:
    • Public Health
    • Life Sciences
    • Social Sciences
    • International Development
    • Or a related field
  • Project Management certification is an added advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant professional experience.
  • At least 5 years working in:
    • Polio eradication
    • Public health
    • Infectious disease surveillance
    • Global Health Security
  • Experience managing large-scale public health programs.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Polio surveillance
    • Laboratory systems
    • Case investigation
    • Data management
    • Outbreak response
  • Experience working with NGOs, governments, or international organizations.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Required Skills

  • Strong leadership and project management abilities.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of international public health standards.
  • Stakeholder engagement and partnership management.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.

Salary

Annual Gross Salary: USD 49,000 – USD 65,000

Salary is determined based on:
