Job Summary

AngloGold Ashanti is seeking an Engineer 1 – UG Ventilation to design, implement, monitor, and optimize underground mine ventilation systems.

The role is responsible for maintaining adequate airflow and controlling dust, heat, diesel emissions, and hazardous gases to ensure a safe, healthy, and productive underground mining environment.

Key Responsibilities

Underground Ventilation

• Develop and maintain underground ventilation plans and models.
• Design ventilation circuits, fans, regulators, and ventilation controls.
• Monitor airflow, gas concentrations, temperature, and dust levels.
• Conduct ventilation surveys and analyze performance data.
• Ensure ventilation systems meet operational and safety requirements.

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with mine ventilation legislation and company standards.
• Investigate and resolve ventilation problems affecting safety or production.
• Stop unsafe work and report it to the appropriate supervisor or safety personnel.
• Prepare statutory documentation and technical reports.

Mine Planning & Optimization

• Incorporate ventilation requirements into mine designs and planning.
• Recommend improvements to increase ventilation efficiency.
• Identify opportunities to reduce ventilation operating costs.
• Prepare ventilation schedules and performance reports.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives.

Team Support

• Mentor ventilation technicians.
• Work closely with operational teams, service providers, and other functional departments.
• Promote teamwork, cooperation, and strong working relationships.

Qualifications

• Mining Engineering degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
• Must be registered with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).

Experience

• 2–5 years or more of experience working in underground mining.
• Experience with different underground mechanized mining methods.

Ideal Candidate

This position is best suited to a registered Mining Engineer with at least 2 years of underground mining experience, particularly someone with practical experience in underground mechanized mining and ventilation systems.

Strong candidates should also demonstrate good knowledge of underground mine safety, ventilation monitoring, technical analysis, and mine-planning requirements.
