Job Summary

AngloGold Ashanti is looking for a Tradesperson 1 – UG Mechanic to support planned and breakdown maintenance of underground mining equipment.

The successful candidate will diagnose, repair, inspect, and maintain mechanical and electronic systems while ensuring equipment is safe, reliable, and maintained according to OEM standards and GGM safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Maintenance & Repairs

• Perform mechanical diagnostics to identify equipment faults.
• Repair mechanical and electronic faults on underground mining equipment.
• Work on equipment including:
  • Jumbos
  • Solos
  • CAT trucks and loaders
  • ITs
  • Normet machines
  • Drill rigs
  • Other underground mining equipment.
• Replace damaged or faulty components.
• Repair and maintain petrol and diesel engines.
• Assemble and install mechanical and electronic systems.
• Conduct tests after repairs to confirm equipment is functioning correctly.

Equipment Inspection

• Inspect mining equipment for damage and defects.
• Record findings in inspection registers.
• Report defects to the supervisor for appropriate action.
• Complete assigned maintenance tasks according to approved procedures.
• Ensure repaired equipment meets OEM standards and improves operational uptime.

Planning & Coordination

• Plan work before starting maintenance activities.
• Liaise with the maintenance planner to obtain required parts and equipment.
• Report completed maintenance tasks to the Senior Supervisor.
• Work additional hours when required based on production priorities.

Safety & Housekeeping

• Protect personal health and safety and that of others.
• Follow GGM safety standards and approved work procedures.
• Proactively identify and address unsafe conditions.
• Exercise the authority to stop unsafe work.
• Maintain good housekeeping in the workplace.

Qualifications

Candidates must have:

• VETA Trade Test Certificate Grade One / Level Three in Mechanical Engineering.
• Diploma or FTC in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering.

Experience

• At least 3 years of experience working on underground mining equipment.
• Experience with equipment such as:
  • Caterpillar trucks and loaders
  • Sandvik TH663i trucks
  • Sandvik LH662i loaders
  • Normet machines
  • DD421 and DL421-15C drill rigs
  • DS422i Cable Bolter
  • Cubex DU411
• Previous experience in a similar underground mechanic position is an advantage.

Ideal Candidate

This position is particularly suitable for an experienced underground mining mechanic with a recognized mechanical trade qualification and practical experience maintaining heavy underground mining equipment.

Experience specifically with CAT, Sandvik, Normet, drill rigs, cable bolters, and other mechanized underground equipment will be highly relevant.
