Senior Advisor – Environmental Stewardship & Climate Action (ESCA)

Job Purpose

The Senior Advisor – Environmental Stewardship & Climate Action (ESCA) provides technical and strategic leadership on environmental sustainability and climate change initiatives across the East Africa Region.

The role supports Field Offices (FOs) by:

  • Enhancing environmental stewardship.
  • Leading climate action initiatives.
  • Providing technical support for program design and implementation.
  • Conducting quality assurance of ESCA programs.
  • Assessing capacity gaps and delivering Training of Facilitators (ToFs).
  • Promoting learning and innovation through Communities of Practice (CoP).
  • Coordinating with World Vision Global Environment and Climate Change teams.
  • Representing the region in internal and external climate-related forums.

The position also strengthens the organization’s readiness for large-scale climate financing, particularly through the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and other climate funding mechanisms by leading donor engagement, technical support, resource mobilization, and high-quality program development.


Key Responsibilities

1. Environmental Stewardship & Climate Action Leadership (40%)

The successful candidate will:

  • Support implementation of the Environmental Stewardship Policy across East Africa Regional Office (EARO) offices.
  • Support Field Offices in establishing and strengthening integrated ESCA programming.
  • Build Field Office capacity in environmental stewardship and climate action.
  • Develop advocacy and communication materials including:
    • Capability statements
    • Success stories
    • Research publications
    • Business cases
    • Return on Investment (ROI) analyses
  • Establish and nurture Communities of Practice (CoP).
  • Promote initiatives that reduce the organization’s carbon footprint.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on sustainability initiatives.
  • Monitor Field Office implementation of ESCA initiatives.
  • Track and report Regional and Global Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Advise Field Offices on ESCA-related policy matters.

2. Climate Finance & Resource Mobilization (30%)

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead regional preparedness for:
    • Green Climate Fund (GCF)
    • Other major climate financing opportunities
  • Support Field Offices to engage accredited national and regional climate finance entities.
  • Build capacity on:
    • GCF processes
    • Concept note development
    • Compliance requirements
  • Collaborate with World Vision Australia and Grant Acquisition Management (GAM) teams to develop bankable climate proposals.
  • Identify funding opportunities including:
    • Adaptation Fund
    • Great Green Wall Initiative
    • African Development Bank (AfDB)
    • Other climate financing mechanisms
  • Integrate climate finance priorities into GAM plans.
  • Develop ESCA capability statements.
  • Promote innovative financing solutions including:
    • Blended finance
    • Climate investments
    • Private sector partnerships
  • Explore opportunities in:
    • Carbon markets
    • Nature-based financing
  • Develop investment-ready climate initiatives.

3. Donor Engagement, Partnerships & External Positioning (30%)

The advisor will:

  • Lead strategic engagement with Nairobi-based donors and climate finance partners.
  • Build partnerships with:
    • Multilateral donors
    • Bilateral donors
    • Climate finance institutions
    • Research institutions
    • Think tanks
  • Represent the organization in regional and global climate forums.
  • Strengthen organizational visibility and thought leadership in ESCA.
  • Position the organization as a preferred implementing partner for large-scale climate programs.

4. External & Internal Engagement (15%)

Responsibilities include:

  • Engage strategically with donors and funding offices.
  • Build partnerships that strengthen ESCA programming.
  • Support Field Offices in establishing external partnerships.
  • Represent the region in organizational discussions and technical platforms.
  • Ensure Field Offices access appropriate:
    • Technical expertise
    • Practical tools
    • User-friendly project approaches
  • Maintain relationships with organizations, agencies, and think tanks involved in environmental stewardship and climate action.

5. Capacity Building (5%)

The successful candidate will:

  • Identify ESCA capacity gaps across Field Offices.
  • Contribute to Field Office strategies and implementation plans.
  • Support contextualization of World Vision project models, including:
    • Regreening Communities
    • Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR)
    • Citizens Voice and Action (CVA) Environmental Social Accountability Approach
    • Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Model (based on COVACA)
  • Design and deliver tailored capacity-building programs.
  • Provide technical training both in-person and virtually.

Nexus Programming

Support integrated programming across:

  • Humanitarian response
  • Development
  • Peacebuilding

The role will promote collaboration between humanitarian and development actors while addressing interconnected challenges such as:

  • Climate change
  • Food insecurity
  • Extreme poverty
  • Resource conflicts

Required Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

Education

  • Master’s Degree in:
    • Environmental Sciences
    • Climate Change
  • Degree in Program Management or International Development is an added advantage.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in:
    • Climate change
    • Environmental stewardship
    • Program development
    • Project implementation
    • Resource mobilization
    • Emergency response
    • Development programming
    • Advocacy

Experience should include:
