Barley Agronomy Specialist (Northern Region)

Job Purpose

To ensure consistent, high-quality barley production in the Northern region by supporting farmers to achieve optimal yield, quality, and supply targets aligned with the company’s sourcing strategy.


Key Responsibilities

Farmer Mobilization & Support

  • Mobilize, recruit, and register barley farmers within the assigned region
  • Coach farmers to manage farming operations as sustainable and profitable businesses
  • Promote adoption of mechanization (e.g., planters, threshers, harvesting equipment)

Crop Production & Agronomy

  • Ensure timely land preparation, planting, weeding, and harvesting
  • Enforce recommended agronomic practices
  • Promote soil fertility management, moisture conservation, and crop rotation
  • Ensure use of certified barley seed supplied by the company at correct seed rates

Crop Monitoring & Advisory

  • Monitor crop performance throughout the growth cycle
  • Identify pests, diseases, and abnormalities, and advise on corrective actions
  • Ensure proper and timely application of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides

Planning & Resource Management

  • Identify and verify acreage and input requirements
  • Maintain accurate records of farmer data, input distribution, acreage, and yields
  • Assist in recovery of input costs advanced to farmers

Reporting & Digital Tools

  • Prepare and submit timely monthly reports, including sustainability and production metrics
  • Utilize digital tools for accurate reporting of agronomic and non-agronomic data
  • Disseminate improved farming technologies and agronomic best practices

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Agronomy or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in agronomy or extension services
  • Experience working with both commercial and smallholder farmers
  • Knowledge of barley production systems is an added advantage
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Fluency in English (Swahili is highly advantageous)
