Sorghum Agronomy Specialist (Dodoma Region)

Job Purpose

To drive sustainable sorghum production in the Dodoma region by supporting farmers to achieve optimal yields, quality, and supply targets aligned with the company’s sourcing strategy.


Key Responsibilities

Farmer Mobilization & Support

  • Mobilize, recruit, and register sorghum farmers within the assigned region
  • Support farmers in managing farming as profitable business enterprises
  • Promote adoption of mechanization (e.g., planters, threshers, and related equipment)

Crop Production & Agronomy

  • Ensure timely land preparation, planting, weeding, and harvesting
  • Enforce recommended agronomic practices
  • Promote soil fertility, moisture conservation, and crop rotation practices
  • Ensure use of certified sorghum seed supplied by the company at correct seed rates

Crop Monitoring & Advisory

  • Monitor crops throughout the full growth cycle
  • Identify pests, diseases, and abnormalities, and advise on corrective actions
  • Ensure proper and timely application of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides

Planning & Resource Management

  • Identify and verify acreage and input requirements
  • Maintain accurate records of seed distribution, acreage, and yields
  • Assist in recovery of input costs advanced to farmers

Reporting & Compliance

  • Prepare and submit timely monthly reports, including sustainability activities
  • Disseminate improved farming technologies and best practices

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Agronomy or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in agronomy or agricultural extension
  • Experience working with smallholder and commercial farmers
  • Knowledge of sorghum production systems is an added advantage
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Fluency in English (Swahili is an added advantage)
