Head of Internal Audit

Job Purpose Statement

Provide independent, reliable, valued, insightful and timely assurance to the Board and Executive Management on effectiveness of governance, risk management and control over current and evolving risks.

Key Accountabilities (Duties and Responsibilities)

Financial 15%

  • Develop and monitor the Internal Audit department budget and ensure the department is adequately resourced.
  • Review periodic financial performance reports including regulatory returns and advise Management and the Board on current and potential improvement areas.
  • Review adequacy of the Bank’s financial strategy/target operating model including revenue maximization initiatives and cost optimization.
  • Maintain strong relationships with NCBA leadership, providing guidance/consultation on strategies to improve financial and operational performance

Internal Business Processes 55%

  • Develop and cascade audit vision and strategy aligned to NCBA priorities
  • Prepare Internal Audit Manual, Charter and Audit Programme/Methodology.
  • Plan and implement financial, operational, management, compliance and IT audits to ensure internal control frameworks are effective.
  • Prepare audit methodology and design audit tests/procedures to evaluate controls, operations, and business risks.
  • Develop periodic risk-based audit plans and ensure work plans and programs remain updated and relevant.
  • Provide leadership in execution of risk-based (agile) audits ensuring quality output and compliance with standards and ethics.
  • Document and communicate audit results (including reports to Board Audit Committee) highlighting residual risks, root causes and recommended mitigations.
  • Conduct continuous monitoring, investigations and key risk assessments
  • Follow up remediation progress and perform validation tests to confirm sustainable controls.
  • Review accuracy of periodic financial reports including management accounts and regulatory statements.
  • Prepare and present audit reports to Executive Management, Board, Group and Regulator with feasible recommendations.
  • Advise management and Board on strategies relating to financial/operational improvement, risks, controls and governance.
  • Maintain relationships with Executive Management, Board, External Auditors and Regulators; support external examinations.
  • Engage regularly with Board Audit Committee to meet expectations on risk, control and governance.
  • As EXCOM invitee, guide business on risks/controls/governance in new product/project implementation.
  • Review quarterly financial statements for regulatory publication.
  • Build a high-impact, high-performance audit team
  • Motivate team through leadership development and succession planning
  • Review projects relating to business processes, systems, controls or operations.
  • Oversee Whistleblowing process.
  • Perform other tasks or special projects assigned by Management, Board or Regulator.

Customer 10%

  • Set Internal Audit strategy aligned to NCBA priorities.
  • Understand client needs and perform customer-centric audits to improve process efficiency.
  • Build strong relationships and trust with stakeholders.
  • Produce timely audit reports and ensure follow-up of audit findings.
  • Obtain stakeholder feedback and take action to enhance audit work.
  • Maintain strong BARC relationships ensuring concerns are addressed

  • Implement coaching, mentoring, rotation, succession, retention, training and development frameworks for the audit team.
  • Embrace continuous learning and professional development for self and team.

Job Specifications

Knowledge and Skills 

  • Knowledge of Internal Audit Standards, Code of Ethics and other best Practice Auditing and Accounting standards. Solid knowledge of applying internal audit standards (IPPF) to perform value adding internal audit services
  • Proven track record of good conduct, integrity, objective mind, and leadership skills with ability to influence and motivate teams towards a common goal demonstrated by high performance in previous roles.
  • Knowledge of banking risks and controls as well as practical understanding of local and international regulatory environment.
  • Business acumen, and knowledge about banking business strategy, new and emerging financial products and services.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills with a high level of commitment and enthusiasm.
  • Good communication, presentation, negotiation, and stakeholders management skills.
  • Ability to exercise critical thinking and professional scepticism in the audit process. Analytical mind with the ability to interpret key data/facts.
  • Knowledge and experience in ICT and audit tools .Practical experience in computer based audit techniques within financial service industry.
  • Eye for detail in checks and balances, rules and processes, risk, and governance
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with colleagues and other management teams
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with multiple stakeholders such as BARCC, Board, regulator, and external auditors
  • Ability to negotiate and influence senior/middle managers to facilitate change and improvement.

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • University Degree in Accounting, Banking, Finance, Economics or other business related subjects from a reputable learning institution.
  • Must be registered member with the NBAA as a Certified Public Accountant
  • Certified as a CPA/ACCA/CIA/CISA or its equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience of risk based auditing or risk/control assurance activities preferably in financial services industry in a managerial position.
