Barrick Africa Middle East is seeking an experienced L&D Superintendent – Operational Excellence Mining & Field Operations to lead workforce capability development, competency management, and training programs across underground and open pit mining operations.

The successful candidate will support operational excellence by developing skilled mining teams, improving workforce readiness, and ensuring employees meet safety, technical, and performance standards.


Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Workforce Capability Development

  • Develop and implement annual mining training and capability development strategies.
  • Align training programs with mine plans, operational objectives, and workforce requirements.
  • Partner with Mining Managers, Superintendents, and Technical Services teams to identify capability gaps.
  • Lead workforce planning initiatives supporting succession planning and talent development.
  • Establish sustainable learning pathways for underground and open pit mining personnel.

2. Underground Mining Training & Competency Development

Provide leadership and governance for competency programs covering:

  • Underground production mining.
  • Jumbo operations.
  • Long hole drilling.
  • Development mining.
  • Charge-up operations.
  • Underground load and haul activities.
  • Ground support operations.
  • Underground service crews.
  • Underground supervisory development.

Key duties include:

  • Establish competency standards and assessment requirements.
  • Monitor workforce capability and training compliance.
  • Support adoption of new mining methods and technologies.
  • Coordinate technical training interventions.
  • Ensure effective knowledge transfer among underground teams.

3. Open Pit Mining Training & Competency Development

Lead training programs for:

  • Excavator operators.
  • Haul truck operators.
  • Dozer operators.
  • Grader operators.
  • Drill operators.
  • Shovel operators.
  • Ancillary equipment operators.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing operator training pathways.
  • Improving equipment operator competency and performance.
  • Implementing competency-based assessments.
  • Supporting operational excellence initiatives.
  • Coordinating onboarding and development programs for new operators.

4. Equipment Operator Development & Simulator Programs

  • Establish structured operator development programs.
  • Manage simulator-based learning initiatives.
  • Develop progression pathways from trainee to competent operator.
  • Coordinate refresher and advanced operator training.
  • Maintain competency standards across mining fleets.

5. Competency Management & Operational Readiness

  • Develop competency matrices and learning pathways.
  • Maintain training needs analysis.
  • Ensure competency assessments are completed and documented.
  • Manage verification of competency processes.
  • Support workforce readiness for new projects, equipment, and operational changes.

6. Safety Leadership & Risk Management

  • Ensure training programs support critical risk controls and safety requirements.
  • Promote safe work practices and continuous learning.
  • Support fatal risk management initiatives.
  • Ensure employees are competent in emergency response procedures.
  • Identify and manage competency-related operational risks.

7. Contractor & Workforce Development

  • Oversee contractor training and competency requirements.
  • Ensure contractors meet site training standards.
  • Support onboarding and workforce mobilization.
  • Develop internal talent pipelines.
  • Support career progression and leadership development programs.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in:
    • Mining Engineering
    • Mineral Resource Management
    • Engineering & Training
    • Related discipline

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in:
    • Mining
    • Business Administration
    • Learning & Development
    • Leadership
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122) or equivalent.
  • Assessor and Verifier certification.

Required Experience & Skills

Candidates must have:

  • 8–10 years’ experience in mining operations.
  • Experience working in underground and/or open pit mining environments.
  • Minimum 5 years’ leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Experience with competency-based training systems.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles.
  • Understanding of mining equipment and operating practices.
  • Experience using Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Experience managing training, competency, and workforce development programs.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and engage operational stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to improve workforce capability and operational performance.
  • Strong leadership, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of mine safety regulations and industry best practices.
