Position Summary

The Principal, Tailings Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership and strategic oversight of tailings and geotechnical structures across the operation. This includes ensuring compliance with global standards, regulatory requirements, and corporate governance frameworks.

The role ensures that tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and related geotechnical structures are safely designed, operated, monitored, and maintained throughout their full lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safety, Governance & Compliance

• Promote a strong safety culture aligned with AngloGold Ashanti’s Safety Vision and Values.
• Support incident and accident investigations where required.
• Ensure full compliance with:
  • Applicable legislation
  • Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM)
  • AngloGold Ashanti corporate standards
• Conduct quarterly inspections of all Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs).
• Participate in annual CTO TSF audits and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
• Maintain structured reporting frameworks for senior leadership.
• Engage directly with:
  • Engineer of Record (EoR)
  • Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB)
  • Second line assurance functions

2. Technical Leadership (Tailings & Geotechnical Structures)

• Provide technical leadership for all tailings and sediment disposal facilities, including:
  • Tailings dams
  • Filtered tailings stacks
  • Sediment retention structures
• Oversee the full asset lifecycle:
  • Conceptual design
  • Construction
  • Operation
  • Remediation
  • Decommissioning
• Develop and implement operational procedures for geotechnical structures.
• Ensure safe operation, monitoring, and execution of remediation and expansion works.

3. Operational Support & Decision-Making

• Provide leadership support to tailings operations at site level.
• Advise General Managers on tailings-related operational and budget decisions.
• Lead and support remedial actions for identified TSF issues.
• Ensure due diligence in addressing operational discrepancies.

4. Strategic Planning & Life-of-Mine (LOM)

• Contribute to TSF Life-of-Mine planning, including:
  • Capacity strategy
  • Expansion planning
  • Closure and rehabilitation strategies
• Support integration of tailings requirements into business and strategic plans.

5. Design, Projects & Engineering Studies

• Participate in multidisciplinary engineering studies for:
  • Existing TSF upgrades
  • New TSF designs
• Review and validate designs across all project stages:
  • Concept
  • Pre-Feasibility (PFS)
  • Feasibility Study (FS)
  • Detailed design
• Ensure alignment between construction and approved engineering design parameters.

6. Business Improvement & Value Optimization

• Conduct technical appraisals across operations to identify improvement opportunities.
• Optimize capital and operational expenditure (OPEX/CAPEX).
• Apply value engineering to improve constructability, cost efficiency, and feasibility.
• Benchmark tailings practices against global standards and industry peers.

7. Technical Governance & Risk Management

• Implement and maintain technical governance frameworks for TSFs.
• Assess geotechnical risks, including:
  • Dam stability
  • Drainage systems
  • Structural integrity
• Validate critical engineering assumptions and parameters.
• Ensure robust engineering decision-making aligned with safety and business priorities.

8. Team Leadership & Capability Development

• Support development of site-based Tailings and Geotechnical teams.
• Build technical capability within operational teams.
• Provide leadership in planning and resourcing for tailings functions.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in:
  • Civil Engineering, or
  • Geotechnical Engineering

Advantageous

• Postgraduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 10 years’ experience in:
  • Tailings engineering, and/or
  • Geotechnical engineering

---

Technical Experience

• Design, review, and optimization of:
  • Tailings storage facilities (TSFs)
  • Saddle dams
  • Buttresses
  • Drainage systems
• Experience across project lifecycle stages:
  • Conceptual design
  • Pre-feasibility and feasibility studies
  • Detailed engineering design
• Strong working knowledge of:
  • GISTM (Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management)
  • CDA, ANCOLD, ICOLD, MAC standards
• Experience in:
  • Tailings governance frameworks
  • Construction oversight and design compliance
  • Geotechnical risk assessment and dam safety
  • Value engineering and cost optimization
