Note: This is a single position advertised in multiple countries. Only one candidate will be hired, and the final duty station will depend on the successful candidate’s residence and organizational needs.
Purpose of the Role
The Regional Director provides strategic, spiritual, and operational leadership for World Renew’s work across East and Southern Africa. Reporting to the Chief Program and Impact Officer and serving as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the role ensures the effective implementation of World Renew’s regional vision and global strategy.
The position works closely with Country Directors, regional staff, churches, partners, donors, and global teams to strengthen:
- Food security
- Sustainable livelihoods
- Maternal and child health
- Humanitarian response
- Justice and peacebuilding initiatives
The role is grounded in World Renew’s Christian faith and Theology of Development, supporting churches and communities in achieving holistic transformation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Regional Strategy and Program Leadership
The Regional Director will:
- Lead Country Directors and regional staff in implementing and refining regional strategies.
- Guide organizational change processes and evaluate operational structures across the region.
- Develop and continuously adapt regional strategies aligned with World Renew’s Global Strategy.
- Respond to changing humanitarian, development, and geopolitical contexts.
- Integrate Christian faith, Biblical principles, and Theology of Development into all programs.
- Ensure alignment between regional, country, and program strategies.
- Support country offices and partners through strategic and operational transitions.
- Strengthen preparedness for humanitarian emergencies.
- Promote community-led and partner-led development approaches.
- Facilitate and strengthen participatory methodologies including:
- Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA)
- Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD)
- Participatory Learning and Action (PLA)
2. Representation, Partnerships, and External Engagement
The Regional Director will:
- Represent World Renew before:
- Donors
- Governments
- Churches
- Civil society organizations
- Alliance networks
- Regional decision-making bodies
- Communicate World Renew’s regional and global strategies to stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships with:
- Churches
- Community-based organizations
- Research institutions
- Private sector actors
- Regional and international NGOs
- Strengthen church engagement in community transformation initiatives.
- Facilitate multi-sector collaboration and learning.
- Identify and cultivate funding opportunities.
- Expand relationships with:
- Institutional donors
- Foundations
- Bilateral and multilateral agencies
- Private funding partners
3. People, Culture, and Leadership Development
The Regional Director will:
- Supervise, mentor, and coach Country Directors and regional staff.
- Promote accountability, teamwork, and spiritual growth.
- Monitor staff performance and morale.
- Conduct regular field visits to country offices and program sites.
- Lead regional meetings and spiritual retreats.
- Set annual objectives and conduct performance reviews.
- Support professional development through development plans.
- Facilitate onboarding and role clarity for new staff.

4. Operations, Risk Management, and Resource Stewardship
The Regional Director will:
- Ensure country offices and partners receive adequate technical and operational support.
- Promote compliance with:
- Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS)

- Humanitarian best practices
- Strengthen collaboration between humanitarian response and long-term development programming.
- Participate in organizational committees and communities of practice.
- Oversee:
- Staff safety and security
- Asset management
- Risk identification and mitigation
- Lead regional fundraising and resource mobilization efforts.
- Address funding gaps through strategic resource acquisition plans.
- Oversee financial management and stewardship.
- Review budgets, expenditures, and financial reports in collaboration with senior finance leadership.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Regional Director directly supervises:
- Country Directors
- Regional staff
- Other country-level staff as assigned
Required Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidates must demonstrate:

- Strong servant leadership, mentoring, and coaching skills.
- Experience within complex global organizations.
- Ability to lead lean, agile teams with limited operational support.
- Technical expertise in humanitarian assistance and emergency response.
- Demonstrated success in donor engagement and fundraising.
- Financial management experience overseeing budgets exceeding USD $5 million.
Education and Experience
Required
- Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in:
- International Development
- Economics
- Social Sciences
- Project Planning
- Related field
Experience
- Extensive experience in:
- Food security
- Health
- Livelihoods
- Peacebuilding
- Justice programming
- Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in humanitarian and development sectors.
- Significant regional or multi-country management experience.
Preferred
- Previous Country Director experience.
- Regional leadership experience.
Language Requirements
Required
- Fluency in English (written and spoken).
Preferred
- Knowledge of East African or Southern African languages.
Travel Requirements
- Approximately 30% international travel.
- Travel may include:
- Remote communities
- Humanitarian settings
- Disaster-affected areas with limited infrastructure
Work Environment
- Hybrid work arrangement.
- Minimum 2–3 office days per week.
- Regular travel across East and Southern Africa.
- Coordination with Country Directors to maintain leadership presence in country offices.
