Job Purpose

The Senior Analyst – Client Origination will evaluate counter-party credit risks associated with Wholesale Banking lending at the client interface, with the primary objective of containing credit risk within acceptable parameters.

The role is responsible for developing and maintaining close relationships with the broader lending, Structured Trade Finance, and co-financier community to facilitate the syndication and co-financing of sovereign (public sector) and non-sovereign (private sector) borrowing customers, as well as originating and executing transactions across Wholesale Banking customers.

Main Responsibilities

Strategic Focus

  • Provide direct specialist/professional credit evaluation services at the customer interface and appraise client applications within agreed turnaround times.
  • Identify credit and risk management requirements at the source of deal negotiations and business proposals.
  • Conduct credit evaluation interviews during deal negotiations to obtain sufficient and appropriate information for evaluating business risk and deal viability from a credit risk perspective.
  • Decline non-viable deals at source while working with the Head of Wholesale Client Origination, Relationship Managers, and clients to identify alternatives that can bring deals or proposals within acceptable risk parameters relative to profitability.
  • Support other team members in developing high-quality credit solutions for customers and recommend appropriate facilities in line with risk evaluations, with the objective of obtaining fast credit approval from credit decision-makers.
  • Present and defend own judgement and senior credit evaluations to clients in a manner that maintains the business relationship.
  • Identify, quantify, and evaluate sources of risk in relation to the profitability of business proposals and the financial viability of the corporation as a whole.
  • Interrogate and review information obtained to gain a thorough understanding of business parameters that create profit or value and the associated risks.
  • Utilise available industry risk analysis to identify and understand contextual threats to existing and potential clients.
  • Evaluate whether proposals meet sound business criteria and whether counter-party credit risk falls within acceptable parameters.
  • Recommend appropriate business credit facilities, including facility terms and conditions.
  • Prepare credit applications providing sound financial and business justification for deals and proposals within acceptable risk parameters relative to profitability.
  • Present and defend credit proposals to Management and Board Credit Committees to seek their support.

Operational Focus

  • Proactively and timely process credit applications for existing facilities, ensuring consistent, thorough, and timely submission within agreed turnaround times.
  • Detect and evaluate changes in key parameters within business relationships or industries and assess their implications for continued business dealings.
  • Analyse information received from clients and their performance.
  • Establish reasons for risk exposure in excess of credit facilities and evaluate these against business risk parameters.
  • Monitor utilisation in excess of approved limits and arrears on credit facilities and assist Relationship Managers in managing risk exposure.
  • Review the financial and non-financial information of customers and advise Relationship Managers and customers on required revisions before processing credit facilities.
  • Review the correctness of data and information obtained, including financial statements, Risk Return Based Pricing, and Risk Grading calculations, before submission to decision-makers.
  • Build relationships with Credit Originators and Relationship Managers to improve the quality of business proposals and turnaround time for credit evaluations.
  • Share joint credit responsibility with the business.
  • Understand the implications of substandard delivery.
  • Ensure full availability of credit evaluation services to the Wholesale Banking team.
  • Identify risks and barriers to business development arising from clients’ operating environments and develop strategies to mitigate or overcome these challenges with relevant team members and clients.
  • Monitor and control portfolio quality using Conditions of Sanction triggers where possible.
  • Discuss deteriorating trends and trigger events with sanctioning authorities where there is cause for concern, while advising the relevant Relationship Manager.
  • Plan and implement annual credit reviews for the portfolio.
  • Monitor daily referrals to ensure that clients’ facilities are managed within approved parameters.
  • Exercise discretion regarding account conduct based on close knowledge and understanding of client activities.

Leadership and Stakeholder Management

  • Coach Relationship Managers and the credit origination team in all aspects of their daily work.
  • Ensure that team communication remains open and ongoing.
  • Ensure the bank remains up to date with clients’ existing businesses, potential opportunities and risks, and personal and business needs and preferences.

Knowledge and Skills

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of key areas of Wholesale Banking.
  • Understanding of key financial indicators and the use of financial analysis to evaluate strategic options and opportunities.
  • Robust credit knowledge.
  • Strong ability to influence, build, and initiate effective relationships and credibility with colleagues, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Ability to identify, clarify, define, and work through challenges towards a defined outcome.
  • High levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to think in terms of integrated solutions and demonstrate logical, rational, and sound judgement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to listen actively and effectively interrogate and interpret information.

  • Advanced negotiation skills.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in Business Studies is an added advantage.
  • Postgraduate education in Banking and/or banking certification is an added advantage.
  • At least 4 years of experience in credit origination or credit evaluation.
  • Experience in project structuring, financial modelling, validation, and reviewing financial statements.
