Position Objective
The Specialist Trainer – Underground Equipment is responsible for training, assessing, coaching, and developing underground mining personnel on Jumbo drilling equipment and other underground drilling machines.
The role focuses on:
- Building operator competence.
- Improving equipment productivity and safety.
- Developing national trainers and successors.
- Ensuring compliance with OEM standards and mining best practices.
- Supporting production targets through effective training and coaching programs.
Key Responsibilities
Training and Assessment
- Train and assess employees on Jumbo (Drift Drill Rig) operation.
- Conduct competency assessments and operator evaluations.
- Ensure operators meet required performance and safety standards.
Operator Development
Develop and coach operators on:
- Jumbo / Drift Drill Rigs
- Cable Bolters
- Solo Long-Hole Drills
- In-The-Hole (ITH) Drills
Responsibilities include:
- On-the-job coaching.
- Performance monitoring.
- Competency development.
- Advanced operator certification preparation.
Coaching and Mentorship
- Provide coaching to Underground Shift Bosses.
- Mentor Shift Trainers on:
- Safe work practices.
- OEM equipment standards.
- Production optimization techniques.
- Support development of national trainers to specialist competency levels.
Training Program Development
- Develop comprehensive training modules and materials.
- Review and update underground equipment training programs.
- Ensure training content aligns with operational requirements and business objectives.
Training Planning and Administration
- Manage the Underground Training Matrix.
- Review and enforce training calendars.
- Coordinate equipment-specific training schedules.
- Administer underground drilling equipment training programs.
Succession Planning
- Identify national successors.
- Monitor trainee development and progression.
- Provide regular performance feedback.
- Support workforce localization and skills transfer initiatives.
Reporting and Performance Monitoring
- Prepare trainee progress reports.
- Track training outcomes and competency development.
- Monitor effectiveness of training interventions.
Skills Gap Analysis
- Conduct operator competency assessments.
- Identify training and development gaps.
- Design and implement corrective training plans.
- Monitor progress and improvement outcomes.
Continuous Improvement
- Recommend improvements to training processes.
- Promote best practices in underground equipment operation.
- Support achievement of production targets through improved operator capability.
Compliance and Governance
- Comply with:
- Tanzania Labour Laws

- Training and Development Procedures
- Uphold Training Golden Rules and ethical standards at all times.
People Accountabilities
The role holder will:
- Train and assess Jumbo operators.
- Develop underground drill rig operators.
- Coach Underground Shift Bosses and Trainers.
- Develop national trainers to specialist level.
- Conduct operator skill-gap assessments and development programs.

- Ensure proper use of company assets and equipment.
- Minimize unnecessary operational costs.
- Deliver training activities within approved budgets.
- Complete assigned work within agreed timelines.

Educational Requirements
Applicants must possess:
Mandatory Qualifications
- Recognized Training and Assessment Certificate.
- Recognized Jumbo Operator Certificate (Sandvik DD421 or higher models).
- Secondary Education Certificate or higher qualification.
- Underground Mine Blasting Certificate from a recognized institution.
Added Advantage
- Certificate in Cable Bolter Operations (Sandvik).
- Certificate in In-The-Hole (ITH) Drill Operations.
Experience Requirements
Applicants must have:
Underground Equipment Experience
- Minimum 8 years of Jumbo operating experience involving:
- Mechanical scaling
- Ground support installation
- Development drilling
- Strip development
- Inclines and declines
Training Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as:
- Jumbo Trainer
- Shift Trainer
- On-the-Job Coach
Additional Experience
- Underground charging and blasting activities.
- Underground mine development operations.
- Leadership or supervisory responsibilities.
- Working within multicultural environments.
Added Advantage
Experience operating:
- Cable Bolters
- In-The-Hole (ITH) Drills
