Job Summary
The WASH Engineer supports the design, implementation, monitoring, and quality assurance of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects.
The role ensures that all WASH interventions meet:
- International WASH standards
- Donor requirements
- National engineering and construction standards
- Safeguarding and community protection principles
Key Responsibilities
1. WASH Programme Planning & Compliance (15%)
- Support development of WASH technical programme designs
- Contribute to national WASH strategy development
- Prepare detailed implementation and annual work plans
- Develop procurement plans aligned with policies and standards
- Ensure compliance with donor and international WASH requirements
2. Technical Guidance, Supervision & Quality Assurance (25%)
- Inspect water supply and sanitation systems
- Monitor water quality and infrastructure performance
- Review tariffs and pricing of water services (technical input)
- Supervise projects from feasibility to handover
- Prepare Bills of Quantities (BOQs) in line with national standards
- Provide technical supervision during implementation
- Conduct field quality assessments and stakeholder feedback reviews
- Ensure timely submission of technical progress reports
3. WASH Project Design & Implementation (15%)
- Supervise construction site activities and contractors
- Manage contract administration and ensure timely delivery
- Design and implement WASH infrastructure projects
- Support solar-powered water systems and electrification components
- Ensure quality construction and adherence to engineering standards
4. Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting (10%)
- Monitor progress of WASH projects and community interventions
- Analyze field data and prepare technical reports
- Contribute to lessons learned and program improvement
- Support research and innovation in WASH programming
- Strengthen knowledge management systems
5. Resource Mobilization (5%)
- Support proposal writing for WASH funding
- Engage in donor and partner negotiations
- Contribute to increased WASH-related grants
6. Networking & External Engagement (10%)
- Represent WASH programs in advocacy and coordination forums
- Collaborate with government agencies, contractors, and stakeholders
- Engage with WASH suppliers and technical experts
- Participate in sector meetings and partnerships
7. Capacity Building & Staff Development (5%)
- Train and mentor staff and partners
- Strengthen technical capacity of implementation teams
- Support coaching and professional development
8. Safeguarding (5%)
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding policies
- Conduct safeguarding training for staff and partners
- Promote child and adult protection standards in all WASH activities
9. Additional Duties (10%)
- Participate in global WASH communities of practice
- Support multi-sector integration
- Contribute to organizational activities beyond WASH programming
Qualifications and Experience
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in WASH hardware implementation
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in:
- Water Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Irrigation Engineering
- Municipal & Industrial Services
- or related field
- Must be registered with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) as a Professional Engineer
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
- AutoCAD / ArchiCAD proficiency
- EPANET and hydraulic modeling tools
- Structural and hydraulic calculations
- Borehole design and drilling supervision
- Water infrastructure and building structure design
- Solar-powered water systems (pumps, batteries, wiring)
- Strong knowledge of safety standards and regulations
- Strong site supervision and contract management skills
- Strong planning and organizational ability
- Ability to work with government, donors, and communities
