WWF-Tanzania is inviting applications from motivated graduates for the position of Environmental and Social Safeguards Intern to support the implementation of WWF’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF).

Location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (with periodic travel to WWF Tanzania priority landscapes)
Contract Type: Internship
Duration: 12 Months
Reports To: Environmental and Social Safeguards Advisor (ESSA Advisor)

Internship Purpose

The Environmental and Social Safeguards Intern will support the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of WWF’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF) across WWF Tanzania conservation programmes and priority landscapes.

The intern will work closely with landscape teams, community engagement staff, and monitoring and evaluation teams to promote compliance with environmental and social safeguard requirements, support risk assessments, monitor mitigation measures, and strengthen stakeholder engagement and grievance management processes.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental & Social Safeguards Support

• Support awareness and application of WWF’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework across projects and landscapes.
• Assist in integrating environmental and social safeguards throughout project planning, implementation, and monitoring phases.
• Support environmental and social screening processes to identify potential risks and impacts.
• Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring mitigation and management measures.
• Support documentation and review of safeguards tools and related records.

Stakeholder Engagement & Community Support

• Assist landscape teams in updating and implementing Stakeholder Engagement Plans (SEP).
• Support stakeholder consultations and engagement activities where required.
• Assist in implementing and documenting Grievance Redress Mechanisms.
• Support application of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) principles where relevant.
• Engage effectively with communities, including vulnerable and marginalized groups.

Monitoring, Reporting & Capacity Building

• Monitor effectiveness of mitigation measures and support corrective actions.
• Assist in maintaining environmental and social safeguards documentation.
• Contribute to safeguards training sessions, awareness programmes, and knowledge-sharing activities.
• Support data collection, management, and reporting activities.
• Perform other duties assigned by the Environmental and Social Safeguards Advisor.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Academic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in:

• Environmental Management
• Environmental Sciences
• Conservation
• Natural Resources Management
• Risk Management
• Related fields

Experience

Applicants should demonstrate experience or exposure in:

• Environmental and social safeguards.
• Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA).
• Sustainable development.
• Community engagement.
• Conservation or environmental management.
• Community-based conservation or natural resource initiatives.

Previous internship, volunteer, research, or field experience in related areas will be an added advantage.

Required Skills & Competencies

• Basic understanding of environmental and social safeguards principles.
• Knowledge of risk assessment and mitigation approaches.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders and communities.
• Knowledge of stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanisms, and FPIC.
• Experience using data collection tools such as KoboToolbox is an added advantage.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
• Willingness and ability to travel frequently to rural and remote project locations.
