Environmental Officer

Perseus Mining Limited is seeking an Environmental Officer to support environmental management, monitoring, regulatory compliance, and environmental performance across its large-scale gold mining operation in Sengerema, Mwanza Region, Tanzania.

Job Purpose

The Environmental Officer will support the implementation of environmental monitoring programmes and the Environmental Management System (EMS), including air, water, meteorological, noise, and vibration monitoring. The role will also involve environmental inspections, data management, reporting, audits, regulatory compliance, corrective actions, equipment maintenance, environmental training, and supervision of environmental technicians.

Key Responsibilities

Health and Safety

• Promote and maintain personal and workplace health and safety.
• Properly use and maintain PPE and safety equipment.
• Report hazards and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
• Conduct inspections of health and safety conditions and risks.
• Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety policies, procedures, and codes of practice.

Environmental Monitoring and Management

• Support implementation of air, water, meteorological, noise, and vibration monitoring programmes across the mine site.
• Support implementation and maintenance of the Environmental Management System.
• Collect and analyse environmental samples, including water quality, dust, gaseous emissions, weather, noise, and vibration data.
• Maintain environmental equipment registers and calibration schedules.
• Ensure monitoring equipment is serviced and calibrated on time and maintain calibration records.
• Prepare and conduct environmental communication and training for employees and contractors.
• Submit environmental samples to external laboratories, ensuring proper preservation and completion of Chain of Custody (CoC) documentation.
• Identify environmental non-conformances, unsafe practices, and potential environmental aspects.
• Report environmental incidents and non-conformities and propose corrective actions.
• Provide data for daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual environmental monitoring reports.

Inspections and Compliance

• Conduct planned and unplanned environmental inspections across the site.
• Prepare inspection reports and develop action plans for identified findings.
• Track implementation of corrective actions.
• Participate in environmental audits and compliance assessments.
• Participate in community environmental grievances and government joint sampling programmes.
• Review and update environmental monitoring plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Environmental Laboratory and Data Management

• Manage the in-house environmental laboratory.
• Ensure availability of sampling equipment and environmental monitoring consumables.
• Monitor stock levels of environmental supplies.
• Download monitoring data using appropriate software.
• Upload and maintain environmental data in the available database.

Team Supervision

• Supervise environmental technicians and other assigned personnel.
• Plan and coordinate their day-to-day activities.
• Support continuous improvement of environmental monitoring practices and site standards.
• Perform other environmental duties assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Computer skills in environmental management software or similar systems.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Knowledge of Acquire Database Software is required.
• Knowledge of Tanzanian and international environmental management regulatory frameworks.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Additional Knowledge and Experience

• Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS) implementation.
• Knowledge of HSE requirements.
• Understanding of audit and EMS management systems.
• Knowledge of environmental monitoring programmes.
