Position Purpose
The Make Pack – Packer Operator is responsible for operating cigarette packing machines such as:
- GDX500 / C800 / BVF
- GDX2 / C600 / CT / C600
- ASIB / Marden Edwards Packers
The role ensures daily production targets are achieved while maintaining product quality standards, operational efficiency, safety requirements, and continuous improvement practices.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Operations
- Operate cigarette packing machines according to:
- OEM operating manuals
- Operational procedures
- Quality standards
- Service operating guidelines
- Achieve daily production KPIs and performance targets.
- Record machine downtime and operational losses.
Shift Handover & Reporting
- Conduct proper shift handovers with outgoing and incoming operators.
- Report:
- Cigarette production volumes
- Machine breakdowns and issues
- Number of machine stoppages
- Major losses and root cause analysis (RCA)
- Corrective actions for subsequent shifts
- Brand or material change information
- Ensure reports are completed accurately according to company procedures.
Cleaning, Inspection & Maintenance
- Perform:
- Cleaning
- Inspection
- Lubrication activities
- Complete:
- Standard CL Checklists (Run and Stop)
- Standard CIL Checklists
- Attend:
- Pre-shift huddles
- Post-shift huddles
Production Verification
- Review and verify production orders.
- Confirm materials supplied match production requirements.
- Complete brand changeover and packing checklists.
- Report any material deviations according to established procedures.
Quality Control
- Conduct routine quality inspections during machine operation.
- Follow approved Quality Plans and quality control procedures.
- Perform product sampling including:
- 2 packs
- 2 cartons
- Every bundle through the case packer
- Identify, report, and address deviations promptly.
Safety & Workplace Organization
- Maintain compliance with:
- Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards
- 5S3R workplace standards
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Promote a safe working environment during machine operation and cleaning activities.
Qualifications
Applicants must possess:
- Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Or an equivalent engineering discipline
Experience
Required
- Relevant technical knowledge in machine operations.
Added Advantage
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in a production or manufacturing environment.
Required Skills
Technical Skills
- Machine operation and troubleshooting.
- Production process monitoring.
- Basic maintenance and inspection skills.
- Understanding of quality assurance procedures.
Computer Skills
- Microsoft Office Applications.
- Basic SAP knowledge.
Language Skills
- Fluency in:
- English (written and spoken)
- Kiswahili (written and spoken)
Operational Competencies
- Ability to operate machinery efficiently.
- Knowledge of:
- 5S3R principles
- Environmental Health & Safety standards
- Continuous improvement practices
