Job Summary

The Paediatrician will provide comprehensive, high-quality medical care to newborns, infants, children, and adolescents attending Marie Stopes Mwenge Maternity Hospital.

The successful candidate will support safe maternal and child health services through:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of paediatric conditions.
  • Emergency management of critically ill children and newborns.
  • Preventive healthcare services.
  • Health education and counselling.
  • Collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Promotion of quality, client-centred care.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Responsibilities

  • Conduct paediatric consultations, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.
  • Provide newborn assessment and management immediately after delivery and during admission.
  • Manage paediatric emergencies and stabilize critically ill children.
  • Participate in ward rounds and review admitted patients.
  • Document clinical care plans appropriately.
  • Support neonatal resuscitation and emergency obstetric and newborn care services.
  • Request and interpret laboratory and radiological investigations.
  • Prescribe medications according to national guidelines and hospital protocols.
  • Ensure infection prevention and control measures are maintained.
  • Provide counselling and health education to parents and caregivers on:
    • Child health
    • Nutrition
    • Immunization
    • Growth monitoring
    • Disease prevention
  • Participate in vaccination and child wellness programs.
  • Refer complicated cases when advanced care is required.

2. Clinical Quality and Client Safety

  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records and reports.
  • Participate in:
    • Clinical audits
    • Mortality reviews
    • MPDCR meetings
    • Quality improvement initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Tanzania Ministry of Health guidelines
    • MSI Tanzania policies and procedures
  • Promote patient confidentiality and ethical medical practice.
  • Support continuous improvement of paediatric and neonatal care services.
  • Monitor clinical practices, protocols, and standards.
  • Review patient cases and treatment plans to ensure adherence to best practices.

3. Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Work closely with:
    • Gynaecologists
    • Medical Officers
    • Nurses
    • Midwives
    • Anaesthetists
    • Laboratory teams
  • Provide mentorship and clinical guidance to junior staff and interns.
  • Participate in:
    • Departmental meetings
    • Clinical trainings
    • Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions
    • Emergency drills
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

4. Administrative Responsibilities

  • Prepare clinical reports.
  • Participate in service utilization reviews.
  • Support development and implementation of paediatric protocols and SOPs.
  • Monitor stock levels and promote rational use of medicines and medical supplies.
  • Participate in duty rosters and on-call schedules.
  • Collaborate with clinicians and healthcare providers to develop evidence-based clinical pathways and treatment protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Applicants must possess:

  • Master of Medicine (MMed) in Paediatrics and Child Health or equivalent specialization.
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Medical Council of Tanganyika (MCT).
  • Valid practicing license.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of clinical experience in paediatric and neonatal care.
  • Experience in:
    • Maternity services
    • Neonatal care
    • Emergency care settings
      is an added advantage.
  • Experience in NGO or private healthcare facilities is desirable.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience providing clinical mentorship and training is advantageous.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong clinical knowledge and decision-making skills.
  • Competence in neonatal resuscitation.
  • Expertise in paediatric emergency management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and during emergencies.
  • Compassionate and client-centred approach to patient care.
  • Strong teamwork and leadership abilities.
  • Good documentation and reporting skills.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems is an added advantage.
