Barrick’s Africa & Middle East (AME) team is seeking an experienced Reliability Engineer to support the transformation of maintenance performance at North Mara Gold Mine.


Position Summary

The Reliability Engineer will play a critical role in building North Mara’s reliability function from the ground up. The successful candidate will lead the transition from reactive maintenance to a predictive and condition-based maintenance strategy by implementing reliability engineering best practices, defect elimination programs, root cause analysis, and asset health monitoring.

The role will supervise two Condition Monitoring Officers and work closely with the HME Asset Health Specialist (AME Regional) to improve equipment availability, reduce maintenance costs, and strengthen long-term asset reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Comply with all Barrick Health, Safety, and Environmental policies.

Reliability Engineering

  • Develop and implement the North Mara Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) reliability programme.
  • Establish:
    • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) libraries.
    • Defect elimination frameworks.
    • Failure mode prioritization processes.
    • Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) strategies.
  • Improve fleet reliability through predictive maintenance practices.

Condition Monitoring

Lead and manage the site condition monitoring programme, including:

  • Oil analysis and interpretation.
  • Filter cut analysis.
  • Magnetic plug and screen inspections.
  • VIMS data analysis.
  • Hydraulic cylinder assessment.
  • Undercarriage monitoring.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and develop two Condition Monitoring Officers.
  • Establish structured inspection schedules.
  • Develop reporting standards.
  • Coach and mentor team members.

Defect Elimination

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive defect register.
  • Track deferred defects and implement corrective actions.
  • Target the elimination of at least 75% of deferred defects within 12 months.

Root Cause Analysis

  • Lead Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) investigations.
  • Document findings in SAP.
  • Track corrective actions to completion.
  • Implement preventive measures to reduce repeat failures.

Reliability Analysis

  • Conduct Pareto analysis of fleet failures.
  • Produce monthly reliability and failure trend reports.
  • Prioritize high-impact improvement initiatives.

Predictive Maintenance

  • Develop Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) trigger criteria.
  • Establish intervention thresholds.
  • Develop predictive maintenance work packages for critical equipment.

Quality Assurance

  • Conduct pre- and post-overhaul inspections.
  • Improve component reliability.
  • Achieve a minimum 90% first-time quality pass rate.

SAP Asset Health Management

  • Maintain SAP PM asset health records.
  • Ensure:
    • Accurate failure coding.
    • Component life counter management.
    • Complete maintenance history.
    • Effective Phase Model utilization.

Maintenance Planning Support

  • Collaborate with the Senior Planner to:
    • Improve long-term maintenance planning.
    • Support component replacement scheduling.
    • Integrate reliability data into preventive maintenance programmes.

Warranty Management

  • Manage OEM warranty claims related to equipment failures.
  • Prepare supporting technical documentation.
  • Maximize warranty recovery.

Reporting

  • Prepare weekly, monthly, and annual reliability reports.
  • Present key asset health and reliability performance indicators.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional responsibilities assigned by the Superintendent – Planning & Reliability.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Maintenance Engineering
    • Or a related engineering discipline.

Professional Certifications (Preferred)

One or more of the following:

  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)
  • Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE)
  • Equivalent Asset Management certification

Additional Requirements

  • Proficiency in SAP Plant Maintenance (SAP PM).
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driving licence.

Experience

Applicants should have:

  • 5–8 years of experience in Reliability Engineering or Asset Health Management.
  • Experience in:
    • Open pit mining
    • Heavy industrial operations
    • Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) maintenance

Practical experience in:

  • Oil analysis
  • Filter cut analysis
  • Magnetic plug inspection
  • VIMS monitoring
  • Hydraulic cylinder assessment
  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA/RCFA)
  • Defect elimination programmes
  • Predictive and Condition-Based Maintenance

Experience with SAP PM, including:

  • Failure coding
  • Component life counters
  • Phase Model
  • Maintenance history management

Experience working with equipment such as:

  • CAT 777E
  • CAT 6020B
  • CAT D9
  • CAT 992
  • Sandvik drill rigs

Experience with predictive maintenance technologies and asset health platforms will be an added advantage.

Applicants must also be medically fit for work in a mining environment.

About North Mara Gold Mine

North Mara Gold Mine is located in Tarime District, Mara Region, approximately:

  • 100 km east of Lake Victoria
  • 20 km south of the Kenya border

The operation consists of:

  • Gokona Underground Mine
  • Nyabirama Open Pit Mine

The processing plant has the capacity to process approximately 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
