Job Title: Senior Accountant Location: Arusha, Tanzania
Role Purpose: The Senior Accountant will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and completeness of the organization’s financial records, while supporting the Finance Manager / Chief Accountant and Financial Controller in delivering timely and reliable financial information. The role will take ownership of key accounting activities including General Ledger management, account reconciliations, accounting schedules, month-end and year-end close, inventory accounting, fixed assets, and financial reporting.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • CPA (T), ACCA, or an equivalent professional accounting qualification will be an added advantage.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 4 – 6 years’ progressive experience in accounting and financial management.
  • Experience in Automotive, Manufacturing, Industrial or Inventory accounting is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, taxation, cash flow management, and project costing.
  • Experience using accounting software and ERP systems.
  • Experience preparing General Ledger reconciliations and financial schedules.
  • Experience with monthly and annual financial closing.
Competences:
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
  • Strong analytical and financial management skills.
  • Strong accounting fundamentals and excellent reconciliation skills.
  • High attention to detail and strong numerical / analytical ability.
  • Ability to investigate discrepancies and meet reporting deadlines.

  • Ability to supervise and guide junior accounting personnel.
General Responsibilities:
General Ledger Accounting:
  • Review General Ledger transactions for accuracy and completeness and prepare or review journal entries.
  • Ensure transactions are posted to the correct accounts and accounting periods.
  • Investigate unusual or incorrect General Ledger balances and prepare adjusting or reclassification journals where required.
  • Ensure adequate supporting documentation exists for accounting entries and maintain schedules supporting material accounts.
Account Reconciliations:
  • Prepare and/or review monthly reconciliations for bank accounts, receivables, payables, customer and supplier advances, inventory, work in progress, fixed assets, loans, staff advances, prepayments, accruals, deposits, intercompany balances, tax-related ledger accounts and other balance-sheet accounts.
  • Investigate reconciliation differences, follow up outstanding items until cleared and maintain proper evidence and supporting schedules.
  • Escalate long-outstanding or material differences to the Finance Manager / Chief Accountant.
Month – End Closing:
  • Assist in managing the monthly accounting close and complete assigned tasks according to the closing calendar.
  • Prepare monthly accruals, provisions, prepayments and expense schedules and verify proper accounting cut-off.
  • Review accounting entries posted by junior accounting staff and ensure required schedules are complete before accounts are finalized.
  • Assist the Finance Manager / Chief Accountant in preparing the monthly Trial Balance and investigating unexpected period movements.
Accounting Schedules:
  • Prepare and maintain accurate schedules for fixed assets, depreciation, prepayments, accruals, loans, interest, customer balances, supplier balances, inventory, work in progress, intercompany accounts, staff advances and other receivables/payables.
  • Ensure every supporting schedule reconciles to the General Ledger.
Accounts Payable & Receivables Review:
  • Review supplier invoices, supplier reconciliations, supplier ageing and advances for proper accounting treatment.
  • Review customer account reconciliations, customer ageing, receipt allocation, unidentified receipts, credit notes and account adjustments.
  • Investigate duplicate, long-outstanding or unusual balances and support preparation of information for management review.
Inventory Accounting:
  • Reconcile inventory records to the General Ledger and assist with periodic physical stock counts.
  • Investigate stock-count variances and review inventory adjustments.
  • Maintain or review schedules for raw materials, work in progress, manufactured components and finished goods.
  • Ensure inventory-related accounting entries have adequate supporting documentation.
Fixed Assets:
  • Maintain the fixed-asset register and record asset additions, transfers and disposals.
  • Ensure assets are correctly classified, depreciation is accurately calculated and the register reconciles to the General Ledger.
  • Participate in periodic physical verification and investigate missing, transferred or disposed assets.
Bank & Cash Reconciliations:
  • Ensure assigned bank accounts are reconciled monthly and investigate unidentified receipts, payments and stale items.
  • Ensure bank charges, interest and other transactions are appropriately recorded and escalate unusual transactions.
Audit & Financial Reporting Support:
  • Prepare schedules and supporting documentation requested by internal and external auditors.
  • Retrieve documents for audit samples and support resolution of audit queries and findings.
  • Assist with preparation of monthly management accounts and supporting financial analyses.
  • Verify accounting data used for management reporting and support investigation of unusual account movements.
Accounting Team Supervision & Systems:
  • Review work prepared by Accountants and Accounts Assistants where delegated and provide guidance on reconciliations and accounting entries.
  • Monitor outstanding accounting tasks, escalate recurring errors or delays and assist in training junior finance staff.
  • Ensure transactions are accurately entered into the ERP/accounting system and identify incorrect postings for correction.
  • Support improvements to accounting, reconciliation and documentation processes.
