Position Summary

The Technical Specialist – HME Maintenance UG is responsible for diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults, performing breakdown repairs, and maintaining heavy mining equipment underground. The role also focuses on transferring technical skills through coaching and training of Tanzanian national mechanics to improve maintenance competency and equipment reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Maintenance and Equipment Reliability

• Diagnose faults in mechanical and electrical systems and perform repairs on heavy mining equipment.
• Carry out servicing and breakdown maintenance activities.
• Provide technical support to underground maintenance supervisors and trades personnel.
• Ensure maintenance work meets OEM requirements and follows best installation practices.
• Perform electrical diagnostics, fault finding, and repairs on underground remote systems.
• Monitor equipment availability and reliability by supporting effective maintenance practices.
• Conduct daily inspections and monitor quality of work in progress.
• Prepare repair reports, including photographs of major equipment failures.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.

Training and Skills Development

• Act as a technical specialist, trainer, and coach for junior Tanzanian mechanics.
• Transfer knowledge and technical skills according to employee development plans.
• Monitor underground maintenance skill levels and provide on-the-job training.
• Maintain training records for underground maintenance teams.
• Ensure employees develop the ability to work independently without supervision.

Planning and Maintenance Improvement

• Assist in developing underground work scopes for major mining fleet maintenance activities.
• Support preparation of work packages and maintenance procedures.
• Work with planners to optimize spare parts and materials under VMI contracts with MANTRAC and SANDVIK.
• Identify maintenance tasks to be included in equipment service backlogs.
• Support major maintenance projects, including component replacement activities.

Safety and Compliance

• Maintain strong awareness of safety, health, and environmental requirements.
• Identify and manage workplace hazards associated with maintenance activities.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, standards, and legislation.
• Promote safe working practices among maintenance teams.

Qualifications and Experience

Education and Certification

Applicants must have:

• A relevant Trade Test Certificate.
• A Trainer/Coach qualification (certificate or diploma) is preferred.

Experience Requirements

• Minimum of 10 years’ experience in heavy mining underground equipment maintenance and repair.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Candidates should have:

• Extensive experience maintaining Sandvik and Caterpillar underground mining equipment.
• Strong knowledge of underground mining fleet maintenance tools and equipment.
• Experience in major maintenance planning and execution.
• Knowledge of undercarriage maintenance and major component replacement projects.
• Ability to conduct equipment inspections and routine servicing.
• Strong record-keeping skills.
• Ability to safely operate maintenance tools and equipment.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Ability to read and maintain daily maintenance logs.
• Good communication, teamwork, leadership, and coaching skills.
• Knowledge of project management and mining industry practices.
• Ability to motivate, develop, and support employees.
